Respite: A simple guide for parents and carers

Trying respite care for the first time can bring mixed emotions. At EllieB’s, we aim to make it a positive, restorative experience, and a little preparation can help make it smooth and stress-free for everyone.

We understand that trying respite care for the first time can bring a mix of emotions – for everyone involved.

At EllieB’s we want to make respite a wonderfully positive, restorative experience and in our experience, a little preparation can help make the experience comfortable, positive, and stress-free.

At Yarnbrook Cottages, respite and short stays are designed to provide a safe, welcoming environment where people with disability can build independence, enjoy social experiences, and feel a genuine sense of belonging – while carers take important time to rest and recharge.

We wanted to share a few simple ways to prepare for a first respite stay – but, as always – if you’d like to chat to one of our friendly staff about what to expect – we’d be happy to guide you through the best ways to prepare for your specific circumstance.

Tip #01: Where possible, start talking about it early

So many of our respite guests and carers have shared that introducing the idea of respite gradually helped everyone feel more comfortable. It makes it less sudden and more of a gradual idea brought in through many conversations.

Ways to talk about it:
  • Talk positively about the respite options
  • Explain where your loved one is going and who they might meet
  • Find photos online to show them the space
  • Focus on enjoyable activities they may experience like:
    • Games and parties
    • Cooking programs
    • Sporting events
    • Sensory gardens
    • Outdoor entertaining
    • Day trips and holidays
    • Social outings and community activities
  • Use simple, reassuring language
  • Answer questions honestly and calmly
  • You could say things like:
    • “You’ll get to meet new people and have fun activities.”
    • “It’s a safe place with staff there to support you.”
    • “Mum/Dad/Carer will be back soon and can’t wait to hear about your time there.”

Tip #02: Involve your loved one in the preparation

Giving your loved one some control over their respite stay can help reduce anxiety.

Try involving them in:

  • Packing their bag
  • Choosing clothes and discussing when and where they might wear outfits
  • Selecting favourite snacks or comfort items
  • Picking activities they enjoy
  • Talking about goals for the stay

Remember, even the smallest choices can help build confidence and independence. Packing familiar and comforting items can make the new environment feel safer and more comfortable.

Tip #03: share important information with staff

The more information EllieB’s staff have, the better they can support your loved one. We’re happy to listen to whatever information you’d like to share if it helps your loved one feel at home while in our care.

Helpful details to provide:

  • Daily routines
  • Communication preferences
  • Likes and dislikes
  • Dietary needs
  • Medical information
  • Behavioural supports
  • Sensory sensitivities
  • Mobility or personal care requirements
  • Body language identifiers
  • Emergency contacts

At Yarnbrook Cottages, qualified permanent staff provide 24/7 support and work closely with families to create a safe and supportive experience.

Tip #04: start small if needed

For some people, beginning with a shorter stay can help build confidence.

You might begin with:

  • A single overnight stay
  • A weekend respite stay
  • A day program or outing
  • A shorter holiday experience

Once trust and familiarity are built, longer stays often become much easier for both your loved one and yourself.

Respite allows carers time to:

  • Rest and recharge
  • Spend time with family or friends
  • Attend appointments
  • Reduce stress and burnout
  • Maintain balance in everyday life
  • Knowing your loved one is in safe hands can provide valuable peace of mind.
Our final thoughts

The first respite is a big step (it’s okay to feel nervous) but with preparation, support, and open communication, it can become a positive experience for everyone involved.

And we’re here to help make it wonderfully seamless so that you and your loved one can enjoy some space while knowing they’ll be looked after, valued and engaged by a team of passionate carers.

When done right, respite offers carers valuable time to recharge. And for those with an intellectual disability, it can open the door to new friendships, experiences, confidence, and independence.

That’s why – with EllieB’s by your side – all that’s left to do is smile.
