How to Choose the Right Disability Support Provider
When it comes to choosing a disability support provider – selecting the “right” one can mean different things to different families. After all, a provider isn’t just someone who delivers a service – it’s someone who will be responsible for looking after your loved ones and all their unique needs.
For this reason, it’s important you find a provider who takes the time to understand you, respects your choices, and supports your loved one to live the life they want.
Whether you’re new to the NDIS or considering a change, finding the right fit can feel overwhelming. The good news is that you don’t have to rush the process, and you have every right to choose a provider who feels right for you.
Step 1: Understand your options, supported by someone who can guide you
The NDIS recommends beginning your search by talking to people who can help guide you.
This might include your:
- NDIS contact
- Support Coordinator
They can help you identify providers that align with your goals and individual needs. But it’s also worth asking family members, friends, or others you trust if they have recommendations through lived experience. Reading reviews, exploring provider websites, and learning about their values and services can also help you build a clearer picture before making contact.
Step 2: Understand which providers you can choose
Who you can work with depends on how your NDIS funding is managed. For example, if your plan is NDIA-managed (meaning it’s managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency), you’ll need to choose NDIS registered providers.
If your plan is self-managed or plan-managed (something we can manage through our not-for-profit plan management arm, Enable Plan Management), you can usually choose either registered or unregistered providers. It’s worth saying here that both EllieB’s and Enable Plan Management are proudly registered NDIS providers.
As you can see, understanding how your funding works will help narrow your search and ensure you’re choosing providers who can deliver the supports you need.
Step 3. Take the time to meet potential providers
A website can give you a general feel for a provider and a list of what it offers – but speaking to a human can make the world of difference and give you deeper understanding of the warmth, energy and nurturing nature of a provider.
At EllieB’s, we only employ the most passionate advocates for our participants which is why we’re positive a conversation with any of our team members will leave you feeling heard, supported and comfortable choosing us to look after your loved one.
Meeting with a potential provider gives you the opportunity to ask questions, discuss your goals, and see whether their approach feels right for you.
Here are some helpful questions you could ask:
- How do you personalise supports?
- Will I have consistent support workers?
- How do you communicate with participants and families?
- How flexible are you if my needs change?
- What experience do you have supporting people with similar goals or support needs?
Just as importantly, ask yourself:
- Did I feel listened to?
- Did they genuinely want to understand me?
- Did I feel respected and comfortable?
The best provider isn’t necessarily the biggest one – it’s the one that makes you feel seen, heard, and supported.
Step 4: Look beyond the services
Many providers offer similar supports on paper. What often makes the biggest difference is the experience of working with them every day.
Look for a provider that values:
- Respect for your choices and independence
- Genuine relationships built on trust
- Clear and open communication
- Consistency and reliability
- Individualised support rather than a one-size-fits-all approach
When you feel comfortable with your provider, it’s easier to build confidence, work towards your goals, and enjoy the journey along the way.
Step 5: Put everything in writing
Once you’ve chosen a provider, the NDIS recommends having a Service Agreement which should outline:
- the supports you’ll receive
- the cost of those supports
- how payments will be made
- what happens if your supports or circumstances change
Having clear expectations from the beginning helps everyone understand how you’ll work together and provides peace of mind.
A final note from us: please remember, you have choice and control.
This isn’t a light decision. We know, as a team with lived experience among us, we get it.
But remember, the choice and control is yours and yours alone. And, even if you’ve chosen a provider and it isn’t the right fit, it’s okay to explore other options. Because finding the right provider is about more than ticking boxes – it’s about finding people who genuinely support your goals, celebrate your achievements, and help you feel confident, capable, and connected.
At EllieB’s, we believe every person deserves to feel safe, understood, and valued. We know that meaningful support starts with genuine relationships, thoughtful listening, and care that’s tailored to the individual – not a checklist. Because one size, does not fit all.
