If you’ve heard there are changes coming to NDIS plans and you’re not quite sure what they mean for your family, you’re not alone. Here’s a plain-English look at what’s happening and what you can do now.
What’s changing
From 1 October 2026, the Australian Government began resetting some NDIS budget allocations under the Securing the NDIS for Future Generations changes. The two areas most affected are:
- Social, civic and community participation supports, which will be reduced by around 50 per cent
- Capacity building daily activity supports, which will be reduced by around 10 per cent
These are reductions to budget allocations. Many participants don’t use their full allocation, so the real impact will be different for every family.
When it affects your plan
The budget reductions will be applied as plans are created or reassessed from 1 October 2026 or renewed from 1 February 2027.
What’s protected
Core supports for daily living are not part of this reset. That includes personal care, help with daily living, home modifications and Specialist Disability Accommodation. Supported Independent Living, which funds the day-to-day support in our homes, is not one of the categories being reduced.
What you can do now
- Check when your next plan reassessment or renewal is due
- Look at how much of your social and community participation budget you’ve used in the past year
- Talk to your support coordinator or plan manager about what matters most to your loved one
- Keep a record of the activities that make a real difference: the friendships, routines and outings that keep them connected
