At EllieB’s, we speak often about creating wonderfully ordinary lives for our extraordinary participants. But that doesn’t mean their ambitions should be ordinary. People with intellectual disability deserve every opportunity to learn, work, dream big and reach for the stars.
That’s why we were so impressed to see Adelaide’s Flinders University launch the Diploma in Employment Pathways —Australia’s first post-secondary diploma designed specifically for students with intellectual disability.

The one-year diploma combines university study with practical employability skills, career planning and a 50-hour work placement. With tailored support and opportunities to engage with community and industry partners, it helps students build confidence, independence and a meaningful pathway into the workforce.
Flinders disability and community inclusion academic Dr Fiona Rillotta described the program as a turning point in access and opportunity.
“It will provide solid employment pathways, not just helping students get a job, but supporting them to build a career.”
The diploma also recognises something we believe wholeheartedly at EllieB’s: access to education and lifelong learning should be available to everyone. People with intellectual disability deserve the opportunity not only to attend university, but to earn a qualification, develop their skills and contribute their unique perspectives in the workplace.
“We have always seen what our participants are capable of when they are given the right support and a genuine opportunity to try,” EllieB’s CEO Wendy Warren said.
“Programs like the Diploma in Employment Pathways recognise that potential and create real opportunities for people to keep learning, build confidence and shape their own futures. That kind of inclusion brings a big smile to all our faces.”
The diploma welcomed its first students in 2026, and applications for 2027 are now open.
You can hear Dr Rillotta and Flinders student Catherine Babie discuss the diploma on ABC’s The World Today.
